SR22 Insurance Overview

What is New Jersey SR22 Insurance?

The SR22 car insurance form is actually an assurance to the various New Jersey state officials that indicates that a motorist is carrying and will carry sufficient liability auto coverage. Though it is required in most states, the State of New Jersey does not require an SR22 car insurance form to be filed. Instead, New Jersey has its own policies in place to make sure that all drivers are carrying adequate auto insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

Who Needs SR22 Insurance in New Jersey?

Usually, those who have had numerous violations that would label them as “high risk” would need to file a SR-22 car insurance form with their insurance carrier, and then the insurance carrier would file with the state in which they reside. Those who move from a state requiring SR22 insurance may still need to maintain that coverage from that state in order to keep their driving privileges in New Jersey.

Are There Different Types of New Jersey SR-22 Insurance Forms?

No, the State of New Jersey does not require an SR22 insurance form be filed, but they do not have different certificates that other states may require.

Is SR22 Insurance Required in New Jersey?

No. However, the State of New Jersey does have minimum insurance requirements. The Automobile Cost Reduction Act requires that all New Jersey motorists carry at least a Basic Policy. New Jersey is unique in this, as the Basic Policy only has to offer coverage on a 15/30/5 liability basis, with 15/30 UM limits. However, most insurance professionals will recommend a higher level of car insurance coverage as this does not cover all, and lawsuits may occur as New Jersey is a Choice No-Fault system which does mean that motorists may reject the No Fault system and sue.

In the event of a suspended license due to a DUI or DWI, the State of New Jersey does, however, require a DMV Surcharge of $1,000 for three years. While there is no specific NJ SR22 insurance form, car insurance company surcharges for DUI or DWI in New Jersey will vary from provider to provider.
