SR22 Insurance Overview

What is North Carolina SR22 Insurance?

An SR-22 car insurance form, or a financial responsibility insurance certificate, is a document certifying that a driver is financially responsible for carrying the minimum amount of car insurance as required by law for the state in which they are driving a vehicle. In North Carolina, SR-22 car insurance forms are generally not required, though the state does have minimum amounts of car insurance for all drivers.

Who Needs SR22 Insurance in North Carolina?

A SR22 car insurance form must be filed by drivers whose drivers licenses have been suspended or revoked due to driving while uninsured, driving under the influence (DUI), driving while intoxicated (DWI) or multiple traffic violations or convictions. While they are not required in North Carolina, SR22 auto insurance forms prove to the state that a driver who has received one of these serious moving violations is financially responsible for carrying enough car insurance coverage.

Are There Different Types of North Carolina SR22 Insurance Forms?

Yes, there are actually three types of North Carolina SR-22 car insurance forms a driver can file with the state. An Operator SR22 Certificate covers financial responsibility for drivers who operate a car but do not own one. An Owner SR22 Certificate covers financial responsibility for drivers who own and operate a car. An Operator’s-Owner SR22 Certificate covers financial responsibility for all vehicles owned or not owned by the driver.

Is SR-22 Insurance Required in North Carolina?

In NC, SR22 insurance is not required, but all drivers must carry liability insurance. Drivers who are required to file a SR-22 car insurance form in another state should continue to do so and maintain their SR22 auto insurance filing as required by that state’s insurance laws. Loss of driving privileges in another state could impact your driving privileges in the state of North Carolina.

How Do I File a SR22 Insurance Form?

Ask your insurer to file an SR22 auto insurance form with the state requiring an SR22. Your insurer will charge a processing fee, which can vary among agencies. You can go (here) to request a quote from state-authorized agencies in your area. Upon acceptance of the SR22, you will receive the SR22 certificate from your insurer. The SR-22 insurance form must be maintained for two to three years, depending on the state, and renewed in a timely fashion. If your SR22 car insurance lapses, your insurance company is required by law to notify the State and your driving record will be suspended until the SR-22 is reinstated.
